The Port of Dumaguete, known to be the city with a warm atmosphere and with an air of sophistication, is the capital of Negros Oriental. It has a land area of 3,551 hectares and a population of 101,000 people, composed of 22 barangays and 8 poblacion barangays. Dumaguete became a first class city on July 1, 1982 and a chartered city on November 24,1948.

 

The city's name is derived from the word "dumaguit" which in English means "to snatch", but for the Cebuano influence, it is now called Dumaguete.

 

The captivating charm of Dumaguete is the friendly and hospitable feeling that visitors receive. They comment on the city being cleaner than most other cities this size. An easy and safe town to wander around, English is widely spoken. A walk along Rizal Boulevard to the Pier and through the town and Park takes 1-1/12 hours. At night Dumaguete is quiet but the Discos are alive and HOT!!!!!! Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays are the best nights to go out. Getting lost is unlikely.

 

Dumaguete airport is 2 1⁄2 north of town. The city is served with four (4) hospitals and ten (10) clinics. It has an estimated 20,000 students from the two (2) universities, two (2) colleges, three (3) vocational schools and twelve (12) public schools.

 

Within walking distance at the heart of the city is Siliman University, the first university outside Manila and the first Protestant school in the Philippines. It was established in 1901 and recently celebrated its 100th. Anniversary .Its anthropological museum, houses an extensive collection of artifacts dating back to the Sung and Ming dynasties of the 18th century. The Marine lab cultures giant clams and constantly monitors various diving areas for coral and fish growth. Crocodiles and a whale/dolphin display are also at the Lab.

 

The first St Paul's College in the Philippines was founded in Dumaguete in 1904. There are also several Catholic schools and colleges.

 

Pollution free geothermal electricity is produced in the mountains west of Dumaguete and supplies power to all of Negros as well as Cebu and Panay islands. Dumaguete is a 20 min. ride south from Atlantis Resort.
