About Loreto:  Loreto is an unassuming sleepy fishing village with a colorful past. It was here that in 1697 Jesuit priest/explorer Juan Maria Salvatierra established California's first settlement. Loreto served as capital to "Alta" and "Baja" California for 133 years during Spain's colonial rule of Mexico. Father Junípero Serra set forth from Loreto in 1769 on a trek northward to establish a chain of 17 now-famous California missions.

Loreto's history as a resort began in the 1970's when a stretch of sand south of town (called Nopoló) was targeted by the government to become one of Mexico's premier beach destinations (along with Cancún, Ixtapa, Los Cabos and Huatulco). However, following an initial surge of development and promotion, the resort has languished for lack of air service and investment. Aero California came to the rescue in 1989 with non-stops from LAX.

Loreto's scenic beauty is one of its main attributes. Five deserted islands seem to almost float on the horizon while the towering Sierra La Giganta mountains rear up behind the village. Its beaches are somewhat rocky but have smooth as glass crystalline water ideal for sailing, waterskiing and windsurfing.

World class sport fishing remains the city's major draw, particularly for yellowtail (best in the spring) and dorado, marlin and sailfish (best in the summer). It is also home to one of Mexico's finest tennis centers, and now sports a fine 18-hole seaside golf course.

Loreto is as Cabo used to be, before the huge influx of tourists. It is peaceful, serene and warm.  Nestled along the Sea of Cortez, it is fast becoming one of Baja's more desired dive destinations. The marine park with its islands that sit offshore offer much diversity in the diving and snorkeling. The white sand beaches of the islands and the long stretches of coastline outside of Loreto are great for hikes, picnics and clambakes, and don't forget the spectacular sunrises and sunsets that light up the islands and Sierra Giganta Mountains.

What you can expect to experience diving Sea of Cortez, land-based at Loreto:

Sitting off of Loreto's coastline are five dramatic looking islands; Isla Carmen, Isla Coronado, Isla Danzante, Isla Monserrate and Isla Catalina, which are all part of the Loreto National Marine Park. This great 100-mile long stretch of sea that hugs Baja's peninsula in the Sea of Cortez, is refuge to a diversity of marine life and home to over 800 species of fish, unique only to the Sea of Cortez.

It's not uncommon to jump into the open blue to snorkel with passing whales while on your way out to the dive site. The Sea of Cortez has long been known for its schools of dolphins, whale pods, sea turtles and sea lion harems, and of course, there is always the chance of meeting with the giant manta rays, hammerhead sharks and seasonal whale sharks. Brilliantly colored sea fans, black coral and invertebrate life blanket the rocky structures and at night the reefs open up into a rainbow of color.  The diving terrain consists of rocky bottoms, jutting walls, undercuts, overhangs, sprawling reef systems and several wreck sites. The water temperature in the summer gets over 80°F (27°C).  Visibility ranges from 50ft to 100ft+, depending on the particular dive site.  Per our dive operator, August is a good month because the wind usually dies down making for smoother seas.
